A high sea, a heavy wind or (in tidal areas) a significant current can make the installation of offshore infrastructure unsafe or even impossible. Weather-related delays can mean substantial costs, adding £100k's per day for additional vessel hire. Ultimately bad weather can cause fixed-price contracts to sink.
Following PhD research commissioned by our client, an algorithm emerged that could forecast the impact of weather on planned operations. Ben led the initial development team which transformed this research into a user-centered, fully commercial product, Mermaid®. This tool is now used across the offshore renewable energy sector to model operational weather risk. Third Nature continues to provide ongoing development and training of the Mermaid® tool.
